صوّتت الأمم المتحدة لصالح اعتماد خريطة جديدة للعالم تُظهر المساحات الحقيقية للقارات دون أي تشويه. وقادت الدول الإفريقية هذا التغيير اعتراضًا على خريطة مركاتور التقليدية التي تضخّم مساحة أمريكا الشمالية وأوروبا وتقلل من شأن القارات الأخرى. وعلى الرغم من أن هذا القرار غير ملزم قانونيًا، إلا أنه حظي بتأييد ساحق من 164 دولة، وأعلنت دول مثل توغو بالفعل عزمها على إدراج الخريطة الجديدة في مناهجها المدرسية.
