E-scooters are more dangerous than motorbikes
A new study from England and Wales shows that
electric scooters are far more dangerous than motorbikes.
Researchers found a shockingly high risk of brain injuries.
E-scooter riders are three times more likely to suffer brain damage than motorcyclists.
In fact, brain injuries made up more than a third of all adult e-scooter injuries.
So why are these small vehicles causing such severe crashes?
Surgeon David Bodansky says the scooter's design is a major factor.
E-scooters have very small wheels,
so hitting a simple pothole can easily flip the rider forward.
Standing upright also creates a high center of gravity,
which makes sudden stops dangerous.
To make matters worse, less than six percent of riders reported wearing a helmet.
The study also revealed that women face a much higher risk than men.
Women were involved in a third more collisions
and suffered more severe injuries.
Handlebars are usually set at a height for men,
which causes more chest injuries for women.
Children are also in danger, making up sixteen percent of all injured riders.
Because of these figures, experts are calling for urgent new safety laws.
They want mandatory safety training, compulsory helmets, and better scooter designs.
Quiz 🧠
Q1. Electric scooters with small wheels flip more easily on bumpy roads than vehicles with big wheels.
Show answer
✅ True
Small wheels can easily get caught in holes on the road, which throws the rider forward.
Q2. What does "compulsory" mean in "compulsory helmet rules"?
Show answer
✅ Required by law
Compulsory means something must be done because of an official rule or law.
Q3. Why do electric scooter riders suffer so many severe head injuries in crashes?
Show answer
✅ Very few wear helmets
Most scooter riders do not wear helmets, so their heads are unprotected during falls.
Dialogue 🎧
James: Charlotte, I am officially terrified of electric scooters after reading that new study.
Charlotte: Right? They turned out to be far more dangerous than motorbikes!
James: That makes no sense to me. How is a tiny scooter worse than a motorcycle?
Charlotte: E-scooter riders are three times more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries.
James: Three times more likely? That gives me chills!
Charlotte: It gets worse. Brain injuries made up over a third of all adult e-scooter injuries.
James: Oof. My neighbor rides one every day without any protection.
Charlotte: Well, surgeon David Bodansky says the vehicle's design is a huge factor.
James: Is it because riders stand upright?
Charlotte: Yes! Standing creates a high center of gravity. Plus, the wheels are tiny.
James: So hitting a simple pothole just flips you forward?
Charlotte: Exactly, right onto your head! And under six percent of riders wear helmets.
James: Less than six percent? That is crazy!
Charlotte: The study also revealed that women face a much higher risk than men.
James: Wait, really? Why are women involved in a third more collisions?
Charlotte: Handlebars are usually set at a height for men. That causes far more chest injuries for women.
James: I never would have guessed that. Are children getting hurt too?
Charlotte: Unfortunately, yes. Children make up sixteen percent of all injured riders.
James: That is alarming! So experts want urgent new safety laws?
Charlotte: Yes, like mandatory safety training, compulsory helmets, and better scooter designs.
James: I hope those pass soon. I am definitely sticking to walking!
Charlotte: Me too. Stay safe out there!
